Alex Brice is a painter from Houston, Texas, currently working in the MFA painting program at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Their work explores the subconscious effects of grappling with social pressures of imposed feminine expectations and its effects on mental health and gender identity.
With a foundation in acrylic painting, found objects and fabric find themselves both being referenced through painting and as they are. These materials are embedded with the past of the mothers, grandmothers, etc of strangers and a collective psychological landscape. Within these landscapes are hazy references to the physical world that represent the pleasures and pains of traditionally feminine ideals. By removing these from their original context, they aim to deconstruct femininity by revealing underneath what makes it beautiful is something unsettling festering inside. This message feels especially prevalent recently, with feminine-identifying people losing access to rights daily.
